There's a boss rush towards the end of the game. One stage is devoted to Moai statues(like the ones on Easter Island). Gamers familiar with other Gradius entries will recognize familiar themes. Some sections of certain stages can scroll vertically as well. Each stage covers a different theme and is always side-scrolling. This game is divided into nine stages and should take somewhere north of 40 minutes to beat. Not sure why that is and the rest of the game runs quite well but eh there you go. Unfortunately I should point out that stage 7 runs very slowly on the PS2.

Some of my favorite import titles like Shinobido Takumi and Earth Defense Force 2 are available on it. If you haven't already I highly recommend seeking out an import or modded Playstation 2 console. The only other option is the import-only Playstation 1 version.
GRADIUS GAIDEN PS1 PSP
It's available on the Gradius collection for PSP but unless you own a PSP and enjoy playing 2D shooters on it you're out of luck. Unfortunately it's also more difficult to attain than most of the other entries in the series. Gradius Gaiden is simply a great shooter. I mean if that was the case why bother playing Gradius III when you could just play Gaiden and why play Gaiden when you could just play Battle Garegga? It's complete nonsense and I think it does gaming a huge disservice. I think constantly comparing games to similar titles doesn't accomplish anything. I'm not going to sit here and make up a bunch of reasons why I like this game more than all of the other titles.

It is based on the Spread Gun that is yielded by Pentarou in Parodius Da and every title afterward.įor the PSP version, cooperative multiplayer (in which both players play at the same time, as in the Parodius and Salamander series) was removed and suffers from lag at certain parts.As far as the Gradius series is concerned this is my favorite entry. The pulse laser is a two or three pronged burst laser, similar to the twin laser in previous titles. On the easier difficulties, the more troublesome boss attacks are removed and the number of enemies on-screen is reduced. The option whether to use a male or female announcer is also on the Options menu. The player can re-arrange the power-ups on the power-up gauge before gameplay begins as well as change the default arrangement on the Options menu. One is called Guard, which attaches to the top and bottom of the craft and renders the player immune to physical obstacle collisions. These power-ups are permanent until the player is destroyed, even if he switches between the Double and Laser powerups. In a slight carryover from Salamander 2, Missile, Double and Laser weapons can be additionally powered up one level. However, the player can select from several ships, each with a unique weapon configuration. Laser, the Reduce size shield, option types, are all items that have been removed in the transition from Gradius III to this title. However, two new ships are made available whose weapon configurations are new to the series. The military commanders of Gradius, out of options, played their last card a strike by four new hyper-space fighters at the heart of the enemy invasion, the center of the Black Nebula.įour pairs of wings now head for the inky depths of the galaxy, with the fate of Gradius resting on their shoulders. The people of Gradius rebuilt their civilization to new heights of prosperity during a long era of peace, but the nightmare returned once more.Īnd not long after an exploration vessel disappeared in the nebula, nearby planets and colonies began falling prey to attacks by unknown forces. The soundtrack for the game was composed by Norikazu Miura (credited as Nories Miura). It is the first Gradius -named title to incorporate 3D graphics.
